Our ultimate cheap date night: microwave popcorn and a DVD we already own. As for organizing such a romantic encounter, I still insist that the merlot come in a glass bottle with a real cork, but if the budget dictated, there are wines available in a cardboard box.
No dessert is necessary because we usually fall asleep before the popcorn is gone--one of the hazards of being married nearly 36 years. On the plus side, we can use the same DVD the next week, and if care is not exercised, the same popcorn!

Terry, that sounds fun. We almost never go to movies or rent movies, for some reason. It's weird, I know, but it's just our quirky thing.

We go to a local book store and just hang out... listen to music, drink some coffee and then maybe, just maybe... get a glass of wine at a local place on a lake about 3 blocks from our house, and talk about... you guessed it... the kids !

Monica,
My favorite inexpensive date is to go to the library - head to the magazine rack to read all of the magazines you don't have time to read, or hit the new books shelf and make a pile of books you'd heard of but never had the chance to spend any time with.
You can learn a lot by someone's choice of reading materials!
thanks

Edward, my husband and I have a running joke about the library because the past few years, the ONLY times he's tried to go to the library were legal holidays such as President's Day. So he ends up there and it's closed. Every time. Hee hee.
