Check out this amazing video showcasing Gary Chang's 300 square-foot apartment in Hong Kong. Gary is an architect who modeled his space plan after high-density filing systems commonly used in manufacturing and warehousing applications. It's truly innovative and worth the four minutes to watch it! How can YOU innovate to make your small spaces work better for you?

"The big secret in life is that there is no secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you are willing to work. It is called massive action. Action is the gas in the tank. Without it, the car will not run."
"Humor Me" Simplicity Tip #7 is clean out the fridge weekly for a month.
You and your family interact with your refrigerator several times a day, and like any frequently used space, it requires frequent maintenance. But I'm willing to bet it doesn't get it. Try cleaning it out once a week for a month and see how you like it. Ideally, do it the evening before the trash guys come, so you don't have a trash can full of old food in your kitchen overnight. Once you begin getting used to keeping items moving out of the fridge and into the trash on a regular basis, you'll be more aware of what's old, and throw it out on the spot, rather than just leaving it sit there growing green hair until clean-out day.

This weekend I'll be heading to Hollywood to be a presenter at the Fifth Annual Los Angeles Organizing Awards, where we will be honoring our industry leaders, movers and shakers! Check out this video from last year's festivities!
This fabulous, glamorous, red carpet event just keeps getting better every year! The event is open to the general public, NAPO members and all guests, so get your ticket while you still can! NAPO members get a special discounted rate, so come on colleagues, you do NOT want to miss out on the fun!
This year's presenting sponsor is Avery Dennison and our celebrity host is Kim Coles. Last year the incredibly funny Hal Sparks hosted, and the year before that, Sherri Shepherd cracked us up.
As a ginormous bonus, Hornburg Jaguar and the Hollywood Renaissance Hotel are giving away some pretty awesome prizes!
Event sponsor Hornburg Jaguar of West Hollywood will not only be displaying the XF mid-size luxury sedan alongside the red
carpet, but is giving away a certificate valid for a full weekend's use of
the car. (Ooh ooh pick me pick me!!)
In addition, the fabulous Hollywood Renaissance Hotel at Hollywood and
Highland joins the fun by providing a two-day stay for the winner. This really cool prize package (which I plan to win) is valued
at $2000.
So besides the great prizes you can win, the swag bags full of neato products provided by our sponsors, the delicious food, the glamorous attire and the opportunity to rub elbows with the organizing industry's movers and shakers both at the event and at the brunch the next morning, why ELSE should you be at the Los Angeles Organizing Awards?
Well, for starters this event is like the organizing industry's Academy Awards, except UNlike the Oscars, anyone can attend! Secondly, the house will be full of people you know such as my pals Dorothy Breininger from A&E's Hoarders, Linda Koopersmith from Clean House, Peter Walsh from the Oprah Show, and on a more personal note, I'LL be there and I miss you!
Gosh, we haven't seen each other since last year's conference in Orlando (or maybe before that). Another bonus... it's WARM there and chances are it's been dang cold where you live, so why NOT come to LA?? (See? I knew you didn't have a good reason). So get your awards ceremony and brunch tickets today, and I'll see YOU next weekend on the red carpet!
Just when you think your own life is pretty hard, pretty awful, pretty sad, or just pretty crappy, something happens that blesses you with the gift of perspective. The past ten days of non-stop Haiti earthquake media coverage have been that event. These tragic stories have given a lot of people a perspective re-boot. And that's what perspective does... amidst the heartbreak and horror, perspective reminds us to appreciate the smallest things in our lives. Clean water. Food. A roof. Life itself.
We've all walked into a model home and thought, "Wow I could live here!" The funny thing is that model homes are pretty and easy to fantasize about, but the ugly truth is that it's because NO HUMAN HAS EVER LIVED THERE. So how do you keep your home in "show home" condition? I have the answer and it's...
"Most people think that making decisions is hard, especially financial
decisions, so they end up burying their heads in the sand, hoping
someone else will make their decisions for them. The thing to realize
is that by not making decisions, we are really making decisions anyway.
We are really deciding that we will continue to do what we have done up
until now."

Productivity often feels elusive. We say we're "busy" but that doesn't mean we're productive. Being productive means accomplishing things that matter. My best tips for maximizing productivity this year can be summarized with the acronym FOCUS...
“Begin
doing what you want to do now. We are not living in eternity. We have
only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand - and melting like
a snowflake. Let us use it before it is too late.”
