The Simple Power of Uniformity

One of the best ways to simplify your life is to find something you like and just stick with it. It cuts down on a lot of extra unnecessary decision making and makes routine tasks easier and faster. Take socks for example. Like many women, I wear trouser socks pretty much every day and I get so tired of trying to match black and brown socks as they come out of the dryer. Men, I'm sure you have the same struggle because black looks like dark blue and then even if they're all black, you have to really look to figure out which black sock goes with which other black sock. Zoinks.

Then I got this DUH idea... how about I just decide which brand and style of socks you like and only buy that brand and style? This way, you'll never waste time matching them because they're All. The. Dang. Same! Yep, that was a big fat a-ha moment for me.

Another way to create uniformity is to buy each two sets of identical sheets for each bed, but chose a different color for each bedroom. Maybe the master bed gets tan, guest room gets blue, daughter's room gets pink, son's room gets green. You'll never again have to wonder which sheets go into which bedroom at laundry time. 

When you take the thinking out of silly little chores like matching socks and laundering sheets, your life gets just a little bit easier and happier, plus your kids can more easily help with laundry. And isn't that nice?

I recently had the pleasure of working with a client I've worked with in the past. She recently moved into a one-bedroom condo in a fabulous neighborhood and she wanted me to put together a home inventory for her insurance company, so that in case of a fire or other disaster, she'll have a record of her possessions.

My assistant and I tag-teamed the project. I called out the description of each item while she quickly typed them into an Excel spreadsheet. We began in the master closet and a mere 5 1/2  hours later we emerged, having logged...
