You've heard me say that when you struggle with clutter, adding more storage isn't the answer. If you have clutter all over your house, buying a larger house isn't the solution because your old habits will quickly fill up your new space. But sometimes, (I said sometimes), in specific circumstances, increasing your storage space actually is the answer.
Let's say you have a lot of books and you love them all, you use them, but you don't have enough book storage so they're in piles all over the place and giving you grief. Do you eliminate some of the books, or do you add another bookshelf? Maybe both, but here's how you choose...
I recently made a similar decision, choosing to double my storage space for jewelry. I used to keep my jewelry horizontally in a tray, but I couldn't see it
all, and the necklaces got tangled. First, I pared down my collection, but it still felt crowded. I consulted my friends at The Container Store and came home with an 11-peg acrylic necklace rack and attached it to the wall with 3M Command Adhesive Strips. I loved it and for a few years it worked great, but over time as I added more jewelry, it got crowded (see above left picture).
After mulling my options, I decided the simplest solution was to buy a second acrylic rack, attach it right next to the first one, and spread the jewelry out (above right picture). Now I can see all my jewelry again, I can access it easier and the whole thing looks better. So even though adding storage isn't always the best solution, in this instance, it was. By adding more storage, I created a simple, effective, inexpensive solution that MORE than pays for itself in function and value every day!
