"The true joy in life is to be a force of fortune instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy."
— George Bernard Shaw

"Our attitudes control our lives. Attitudes are a secret power working 24 hours a day, for good or bad. It is of paramount importance that we know how to harness and control this great force."

"As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over again the kind of thought we wish to dominate our lives."

No matter how you slice it, moving isn't fun. Nobody looks forward to the moving process, but you'd think for an organizing expert moving would be a piece of cake, right? Heck, how much STUFF can she have??
The truth is that *everyone* accumulates stuff over time, and the longer you live in one place, the more you're likely to have. Well, after thirteen years in our sweet little house, we were faced with our own clutter issues and although our home has never been chaotic in any fashion, did I mention that Christmas Boy, whom I love and adore, happens to have a lot of crap?
He won't readily admit it, but he's a sucker for memorabilia and although he sold many of his Christmas houses and decor, he's still saved a lot of other things over the years. He didn't fully grasp how much he had saved in boxes through the years until we were faced with making our home "show-ready."
I'm not blaming him for anything, understand. I'm acknowledging that when things are packed in boxes, you forget you have them until you move! As for myself, I have about three boxes of memorabilia and sentimental things and I'm okay with that.
Let's back up a second... in March we decided to sell our home and move somewhere closer to the city. We knew we'd need to do some projects to prepare so first, we renovated our half-bathroom over three weekends, which was an adventure, given that neither of us had ever done anything like it before. (NOTE: it came out awesome and we learned a lot!)
Second, we wanted our home to show like a champ so it would sell quickly, so we began decluttering. Now take it from me... your home may look clutter-free, neat and tidy on the surface, leading you to think you don't have a lot of stuff. But every home has closets, cabinets and drawers and that my friends, is where the clutter lurks.
This is precisely what befell my sweet hubby. Going into this, he really believed he didn't have "that much stuff" -- but since my eyes are unusually attuned to clutter, I already knew we weren't nearly as clutter-free as he thought.
Anyway, a few weeks ago we got rid of three dressers, our dining room chairs, some small tables, my old desk and one of our sofas. That opened things up a bit.
Then last Friday we rented a truck, boxed up two-thirds of everything that remained and moved it all into a storage unit where it waits quietly until the house sells.
I am once again in love with my house. Living with just a third of what we own has been SO lovely! I'm enjoying the sheer physical clarity of it all and I'm more productive because I don't have 8267 things vying for my visual and mental attention. My home looks great, and because the things we packed up were either truly *excess* items or seasonal, we don't really miss anything yet.
Once our house sells and we find another home to buy, we'll be faced with unpacking the storage unit and this is a golden opportunity that we WILL NOT SQUANDER.
No, we will not mindlessly haul every single box into our new home. I have already committed to myself and hubby that every single thing that's currently packed in those boxes in the storage unit will have to earn its way into the new place.
Moving time is the perfect opportunity to reboot. I figure if I've lived without it for a few months, it merits evaluating to determine whether I can live without it for good. Stand by for an update as we get farther into Operation Relocation!
